After returning to New Zealand I eventually began working as an artist for a screenprinter. As always, adapting my art to my circumstances, at that time I produced my own range of t-shirt designs, typically featuring upbeat slogans such as DIVINE THING and 100% PURE which were surrounded with squiggles and hearts and daisies. I like the bold work that Keith Haring produced and this influence began to show in my designs.
I have always made cards for friends and acquaintances, which I coloured in the same style with felt pens or coloured pencils. Occasionally I will see or hear from an old friend who will tell me that they still have a card I gave them for their birthday, or a thankyou card or something. I liked to use recurring motifs, such as squiggles which would be one colour, spirals which would be
another. Hearts, flowers, zig-zags - all outlined in black, in a naiive style, with an unlimited number of permutations possible. The whole card would be coloured except for the words which, centred or force justified, were always white with black outlines. My style of greeting card were adapted at a later date into web graphics as e-cards. Some became wild animations. Read more...
